Hip Pain Physiotherapy in Surrey
Hip pain may be felt at the side of the hip, in the groin, around the buttock, or during walking and sitting. Because similar symptoms can have different causes, treatment starts with an individual assessment rather than a symptom-only diagnosis.
How hip symptoms may affect you
We consider symptom location, activity history and functional limitations to understand the pattern and determine whether physiotherapy is appropriate.
- Pain with walking, stairs or standing on one leg
- Stiffness after sitting or first thing in the day
- Pain when lying on one side
- Difficulty getting in or out of a car or chair
- Symptoms during running, gym activity or sport
How physiotherapy may help
Your care is based on assessment findings, meaningful goals and your response to activity.
Strength and capacity
Progressive hip and lower-limb exercise matched to your goals and current tolerance.
Mobility and movement
Targeted work for movement limitations relevant to walking, sitting, work or sport.
Education and load planning
Guidance on pacing, positions and gradual increases in activity without one-size-fits-all restrictions.
What happens at your first visit?
Assessment includes your symptom history, activity changes and goals. We may review hip and lower-back movement, strength, balance, walking and functional tasks. Findings are explained, and referral is recommended if your presentation needs medical investigation.
A plan built around your goals
Care can be tailored to comfortable walking, stairs, sitting, sleep, work, running or recreation. For hip osteoarthritis, current guidance supports tailored therapeutic exercise; manual therapy is considered only alongside exercise.
WellCare offers free plaza parking, elevator access and direct billing for many eligible plans and claims.
Hip pain physiotherapy FAQs
Does pain location tell me the diagnosis?
Not reliably. Groin, side-of-hip and buttock symptoms can overlap, so history and physical assessment are important.
Can exercise help hip osteoarthritis?
Current guidance recommends tailored therapeutic exercise for osteoarthritis. The type and pace should reflect your abilities and goals.
Is manual therapy used for hip pain?
When appropriate, manual therapy may be included alongside therapeutic exercise. It is not presented as a stand-alone solution.
Can you help me return to walking or running?
Yes. Rehabilitation can build mobility, strength and load tolerance progressively around your walking or running goals.
